The Wichita Children’s Home is a non-profit organization that offers the only emergency, temporary, and residential care for children in our community. We are open 24/7 and rely on community support to continue to meet the needs of and ensure the safety of children in need.

Our Pathways program offers a variety of options for young adults, ages 16-23, to learn the life skills they need in order to become more self-sufficient. We provide young people with encouragement and guidance in a safe and supportive environment that matches their needs. Our goal is to help them gain greater independence and integrity.

Stable housing is foundational to long-term success. In addition to our emergency shelter, we provide long-term housing to at-risk youth and young families who have nowhere else to turn. Our temporary housing program is designed to help unattached young adults and young families succeed by removing the anxiety and daily struggle of surviving without a stable home. Through the program, Synergy provides furnished apartments along with case management, therapy, life skills training, education and employment support to help clients become self-sufficient within 18 months.

Hillcrest Transitional Housing offers homeless families, singles and youth a disciplined educational program within a caring, supportive environment. Unlike many organizations whose focus is one-time or emergency care, Hillcrest’s primary objective is to move clients from homelessness to self-sufficiency by addressing the total life situation of the homeless families they serve. The transitional housing program focuses on moving clients to self-sufficiency within a 90-day time frame; households with more barriers to permanent housing may receive longer term transitional housing assistance. Hillcrest also provides a transitional housing program for homeless teens and young adults, ages 18 to 24, who have an educational goal. This unique program offers housing and supportive services for up to 24 months.

reSTart

reStart provides several services for the homeless young adults in Kansas City. They have an emergency youth shelter that provides a warm bed, and hot meals, and a safe place to stay for homeless youth aged 12 to 18. Youth services in this shelter include youth and family counseling therapy, life skills and financial literacy classes, housing assistance, substance abuse recovery assistance, health and nutritional education and activities, field trips and recreational activities, and more.

They also offer a transitional livling program for those aged 16 to 21 who have nowhere to go. This longer-term program allows these youth up to 18 months of transitional housing, life skills, financial education, case management, and counseling to prepare them to live independently upon leaving the program. reSTart also offers youth permanent housing for those who have aged out of foster care and have a mental health diagnosis.

 

Halo

The HALO Learning Center is a safe-haven for children in Kansas City. They help these youth through therapeutic art programs, tutoring, professional development, scholarships, preparation for higher education. The KC Halo Housing Program provides a home and foundation for pregnant, parenting, and non-parenting women between 16 and 21 and their children, who are either homeless or in a high-risk environment.

 

City Union Mission

City Union Mission provides help to single individuals, married couples, single parents, and relatives caring for children who are under 18. First-time guests can stay up to thirty days, and if they are returning, they can stay up to two weeks with a chance for extensions for all. If they enter the recovery and discipleship program, they can stay up to nine months. Vanderberg Youth Center offers children and teenagers life-skill classes, tutors, and recreational activities.
