Jovenes acts as a home and family for the young youths who have none, aged 18 to 25. They are fighting to end the vicious cycle of homelessness. They help our struggling youth by focusing on their housing needs, their healthcare needs, their education, their employment, and their recovery from trauma. There is short term housing, which provides a bed and warm meals to youths needing to get off the street. These are short-term solutions that offer emergency shelters and transitional housing. They are rent-free programs that provide the youth with time, space, and support for counseling and case management. These young men and women are given the help and advice they need to create an employment plan and ultimately move into permanent housing. There are also permanent housing options that can meet the diverse needs of our young homeless population. Permanent housing is a situation where youth is able to sign a lease, pay an affordable rent, and have rights as a tenant. The Wind Youth Center is a safe and non-judgmental place that caters to homeless and runaway youths to get them off the streets. These youths are provided with a welcoming and age-appropriate place to escape the dangers of being out on their own. These young men and women will be given access to a health clinic, which provides basic services as well as STD and HIV testing and education. There is also a full time counselor on staff that is available to all. The Wind Youth Center provides access to shelter, warm meals, peer support, helping get California IDs and birth certificates, laundry services, employment assistance, education assistance, case management services, creative workshops, therapeutic groups, showers, crisis intervention, drop in counseling, and mental health respite. Additionally, they provide a street outreach program that offers homeless youth shelter, sack lunches, transportation, personal hygiene packs, first aid supplies, referrals to other resources, and HIV and STD testing and counseling. They also provide access to emergency overnight shelters for youth aged 12 to 18 and 18 to 24. They also offer housing programs. United Friends of Children is dedicated to empowering current and former foster youth and runaway or at-risk teenagers on their journey toward healthy independence This is through serviced-enriched education and housing programs, advocacy, and healthy relationships with a community that cares about their futures. Pathways Housing is an 18-36 month housing program that offers support, guidance, and opportunities to former foster and probation youth. It includes housing, educational mentoring and assistance, career and vocational counseling and development, life skills training, health education, mental health services, and alumni services. It is dedicated to increasing a young man or woman’s self-sufficiency. United Friends also offers an 11-year education support that follows an at-risk youth from the seventh grade all the way to a Bachelor’s Degree. They provide academic preparation and other forms of guidance through college. Some of the activities include college counseling, workshops, college tours, enrichment and social activities, tutoring, and emergency and enrichment grants.

Youth Moving On was created in 2005 as a transitional housing program. It provides transition-aged youth (aged 16 to 25) with a series of support services to help them find independence and fulfilling lives. There are a variety of programs available, including health and wellness, workforce development, life skills, and financial literacy. Through the Peer Resource Center, they also offer transitional housing, affordable and permanent supportive housing programs. Youths are given more resources for learning independence through internships, subsidized education and scholarships, and other support service providers. They emphasize employment as an important part of finding stability and generational changes to end the culture of poverty that is often associated with former foster children and probation youth. There are weekly classes in hard and soft job skill development and pathways to employment. There are two types of job internship programs: job readiness and career tracks. Young men and women will receive training that will help increase their competency and make them a greater asset to the workforce. A specialized plan will be created which will provide an interactive classroom that has teaches job searching methods, interviewing skills, literacy, and math skills. Turning Point Program: Transitional Living Program provides temporary housing and supportive services to young adults experiencing homelessness. We also have a specialized location, Tommie’s Place, for those who are pregnant or parenting young children. Other Transitional Programs: Some of the other programs we offer are Transitional Youth Housing (TYH), Transitional Housing Program Plus (THP+) and Transitional Housing Program Plus Foster Care (THP+FC). Each program is designed to support transition age youth by building independent living skills with a focus on goal attainment and emotional wellness. We serve young adults ages 18-24 and youth previously under the jurisdiction of San Diego County Juvenile Court, who have aged out of foster care placement, former probation involved youth, and current non-minor dependents involved with California Child Welfare.
